Health Enhancement Systems started in my attic in 1992. The company consisted of me, our amazing editor, Debra Sanders, and several industry leaders — including John Harris (now Chief Wellness Officer at Healthways) and Paul Terry (CEO of StayWell) — who volunteered to be on our advisory board.
I left a great job working for Cathy Baase, Chief Medical Officer at The Dow Chemical Company, in 1994 to run Health Enhancement Systems full time. We moved our family (with 4 kids ages 4-14) into a new house and the business into the basement.
The next year we moved into a real office and a year after that experienced a real flood, losing $30,000 in inventory. Ouch. Through the magic of FEMA we were able to get an SBA disaster assistance loan for $69,000 at 4% — and kept going.
In 1997 we hired Scott Eising (now Director, Advance Market Product Development, at Mayo Clinic). Scott’s vision and contributions persist in many of the products we offer today. In the late ‘90s we began moving some of our most successful wellness campaigns online — and we’ve never looked back.
Today we enjoy unrivaled leadership in online worksite wellness campaigns, serving organizations around the world. We’ve a talented, dedicated team committed to exceeding our clients’ expectations.
In 2011 we moved into our new headquarters (our 5th move) at 712 Cambridge, Midland MI. Please stop by if you’re in the neighborhood.
